Your attendees will become fascinated wiht the skin microbiome and what it needs to be healthy
The growth and spread of skin microbes is kept in check by antimicrobial peptides( AMPs) like Cathelicidins.Psoriasis and dermatitis are two skin conditions linked to problems with Cathelicidin production and processing. Cathelicidins are regulated by vitamin D3.
Meat and dairy are high in the amino acid Leucine which activates the production of excess sebum.Dairy also increases insulin levels in the body.which increases levels of a compound called IGF-1 which also activates the production of excess sebum.
Higher Cortisol (the stress hormone) levels can also increase sebum production. A diet high in added sugar, refined grains, and saturated fat led to significantly higher cortisol levels compared with a diet high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and polyunsaturated fats.

This is completely new to me to introduce the concept of skin barrier based on skin microbiome. This is very useful for my daily practice to educate my patients, especially recurrent skin issues
WING YIU LAI
I didn’t know very much about the skin’s micro biome prior to this course which was why I enrolled. As a skin therapist, this new information I’ve learned is going to help me immensely with my clients! This is the type of information that helps strengthen the client relationship as it shows the skin therapist is not only knowledgeable but their information is scientifically based
CARON
My first intro to skin microbiome. I learned about skin bacteria and the disruptors soaps, detergents affect the pH, acid mantle sebum production
ANDREA
I learned so much about the Skin Microbiome and how it harmonizes with the Acid Mantle and Skin Barrier. I have a better understanding of the pH of our skin and how skin hydration levels and sebum play a huge role in predicting Skin Microbiome levels.
KELLY W
My Aha moment was the glycerol/glycerine! Of all things! Possibly because my interest is in formulating!

Topics covered in this essential class
⭐ The Skin Barrier
The Skin Microbiome forms part of the immune system and the barrier function of the skin. Commensal (good) bacteria on the surface of the skin maintain a healthy 'acid mantle'. Skin maintains acidic pH via sweat, sebum and the skin microbiome.
⭐ Dysbiosis and barrier disruptors
Disrupting the skin Ph with soaps, detergents and skin disorders (acne, eczema, psoriasis etc) causes a rise in the Ph which allows pathogenic bacteria (ie Staphylococcus aureus) to colonise the skin surface.
⭐ Types of skin bacteria
Colonising the two square metres of skin ( that the average human has) are 1000 species of bacteria. The skin flora is commensal (non pathogenic) and / or mutualistic where there's a mutual benefit to be gained from host and microbe (a symbiotic relationship).
⭐ pH and the 'acid mantle'
Your attendees will test their own skin pH and the pH of their skincare products
⭐ Skin Hydration & Sebum
Sebum and hydration levels significantly predict skin microbiome patterns.
⭐ Nutrition, hormones and skincare products
Discover the link between various hormones, sebum product and nutrition. And how skincare products can destroy the microbiome.
